In “definitely never expected this to happen” news: I was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal about designing for motion sensitivities and reduced motion capabilities of browsers.
It’s really great to see things like the prefers reduced motion OS preference in the mainstream media. The more people know that these things exist, the more likely they are to be useful for folks that benefit from them.
On the web design side of things, I do very much believe that designing to adjust to user preferences is going to be something we do more and more. Preferences like dark mode are already becoming common, and responding to some of the other preferences like reduced motion is slowly becoming more common as well.
Una Kravets mentions designing for user preference as part of The New Responsive Design and I think she is definitely on to something there.
